    Add on CD player

This Cd player I bought because I did not want a radio-combo-CD player. it cost more to do this but I bought the Tivoli Music system 2 because a built in Cd player becomes a service problem with time. The player can easily be moved around as well. So far it plays well and is a good 5 star design for its intended purpose. It could be a good product all Tivoli radios and for non Tivoli radios as well. Sonos fans could use a player hooked to a play 5 player like this because of its size and stylish looks.

    Some hits, some misses

The coolest thing about this CD player is that the walnut/beige version is a good match for the KLH Model Eight FM radio. The Eight was Henry Kloss's first electronic product and the Tivoli Model One (the inspiration for the CD) was his last. If you are fortunate enough to have a KLH Model Thirteen stereo adaptor you can set up a compact stereo system that bridges half a century of Kloss genius. Cool.
OTOH, if you don't want to set up a Kloss system there is little reason to buy the Model CD. It is fairly expensive for what it is--a cheaply made CD player. Yes, it looks very elegant but I've had a couple of them conk out after very gentle use. Took one to my favorite tech who told me it was very cheaply built, not worth fixing, and he could not get parts for it anyway. Tivoli HAD a policy of taking dead units back and for $50 sending out a refurbished one. Not bad. But now they no longer do that for units over 2 years old (or without proof of purchase). What you get instead is a 50% off coupon, so if you want to replace the Model CD it will now be $150 (or 112.50 for a refurb).
The guys at Tivoli are great. When I sent my first Model CD in for exchange they agreed to give me a different color (walnut/beige). And they are right on top of emails and phone calls.
Bottom line: If you're a Henry Kloss nut (like me) and want a design that fits with your vintage KLH radios, the Model CD has the right "look." But for any other situation there are plenty of good CD players for half the price.
I rated everything 5 stars except "overall" which I only gave 3. That may seem illogical but factoring in build quality, durability and cost, the rating goes down. Sorry. I WANTED to love this player.

MCD: Model CD Player - Model CD

It must have been a challenge to make a digital CD player to match the analog styling of the Tivoli table radios. Certainly the enclosure and materials are the same so the outward appearance is of a unified system.

The similarities mostly end there. While the Model Two for example has large spinning knobs, the Model CD has small push buttons. The CD player has a digital display while the radios have analog dials. The CD player has a remote control, but there is no remote to control the radio (and therefore power and volume).

As with most Tivoli products, features follow the less-is-more approach. Basic features of play/pause/skip/scan/shuffle are all there, but no programming capabilities exist.

Player quality is quite good, and the player has been able to handle CD-R and mildly scratched disks without any issues. Cabinet quality is probably also quite good for most, but my particular device has an imperfection in the wood cabinet right in the middle of the top front edge. I realize natural materials will have their flaws, but it certainly would have been nicer if the flaw had been positioned on a hidden edge (on the back perhaps).

Overall, the player is fine, and certainly is the one to get if you want a CD player to match your Tivoli table radio.

MCD: Model CD Player - what a great little CD player

What a great looking CD player. It's so elegant and understated. I can put this on my desk at work, and enjoy it's understated design but obviously high price (conspicuous consumption)
