The rare mediocre and overpriced Tivoli Product

My wife and I first became enamored of the sound of the Tivoli Model One radio. Soon we had the Tivoli Clock Radio and next the 2nd speaker for stereo. Then my wife gave me the Tivoli "High Fidelity System," costing at the time over a thousand. At first I was dubious, but not after side-by-side tests with the currently most acclaimed speakers and speaker-dock systems. To discerning ears, the Tivoli system's was most 'faithful" (demonstrating the highest fidelity) to the original sound source. I'm shocked to see this superior system (better than Bose) going for half price (admittedly, design and controls are conservative and not always quick and user-friendly--but the sound!!! unequaled!).

My only disappointment thus far has been the Tivoli iPal. Though not stereo, the audio is superior to most cheap stere systems. But it's not truly a personal speaker to be taken wherever one goes. And when played at full gain outside, its deficiencies are all too noticeable. It falls on its face, the sound simply failing to project with undistorted clarity and power for more than a few feet. I'm incredulous that this little device has gone up in price (from 150) while the Hi Fi System has come way way down (from 1000-1500) to close to 500. it's in the Tivoli High Fi System where the best value is to be found.

Old Friend

I've owned mine for several years now. Except for a battery pack change, it works flawlessly! It even survived a few months in the bathroom while I was taking a shower until my shower radio was replaced. The sound is still very good. It's my Old Friend!

still amazes me every time

Tiny, Big Sound!

Its cute as heck and sounds better than my stereo system, small enough to be portable to anywhere, and can be hooked up to other audio peripherals. My only beef is how long it took to get here but I got over that after seeing it.

Best Product in the World

I am not exaggerating. I have had my precious iPal for six years, and I listen to it many hours every day. I take it from room to room, and outside, too. It follows me everywhere. The sound is great, and the dial makes everything so simple. I just love this product. (I hate even calling it a "product" because I feel like it's a family member. Seriously.)

IPAL- I love It!

I just got my IPAL. I am very happy with the purchase. I spent hours researching this and others. I have a very high end home system and a Bose Wave. This is a perfect little radio. The sound is great. This to me is basically a Bose Wave that is portable. It is very small and easy to take from room to room. The sound is very rich and full. I bought two when they were on sale and am happy with the purchase. This is a purchase you will have for many years and will be constantly happy. Buy it once, buy it right, and forget about it. Great with an Ipod. I like that it has fm and am. I read reviews of low am reception. That is not the case at all for me. I live in a location that has little to no cell coverage and weak radio signals, the AM came in great. This is a great product, Yes it is expensive for a little radio, but if you like a very nice sound, you will be happy with this purchase. Great quality product which is hard to find today. Excellent on my desk at work. I love the rechargeable batteries. I do wish there was an AUX on/off button and the rubber flips on the back faced down versus up. Get the IPAL with does NOT have the rubber coating. To many negatives about that wearing off over time. This is a long term keeper. Very happy. This is my first review of a product...I was that happy with it.

IpaL

I've had my iPal for approximately 7 years. I originally purchased it when I first bought an iPod. The sound quality on this little radio is outstanding. I use my iPal everyday prior to leaving for work and have taken it to several Vegas trips. It still works and sounds like the first day i received it. Thanks for not failing tivoli.

Nine Years Later

I replaced my original PAL with a new iPAL. After nine years of grab and go quality audio for my portable devices, the volume would drop and come back. I decided to spray contact cleaner in the volume potentiometer. Well, the pot. is a high quality hermetically sealed unit. No wonder its been problem free for nine years!
If you are worried about it being a mono device don't be. It sounds 100% better than those toy stereo speakers in your portable playback devices. Its headphone jack is in stereo with increased power for you stereophiles.

Still an Outstanding Radio

Excellent... but...

I am a radio listening junkie from before The Wall came down. My first Tivoli was in 1999 after reading much about Kloss engineering. Since then I have given seven Tivoli radios as gifts because the audio quality is perfect - even voice, and the form was functional (indoor models AND outdoor models). My seeing-impaired Grandmother got the Blue color with White printing... she easily saw the numbers. A younger friend got the Green color and she brought it with her to the pool and camping (the PAL has optional batteries and was once rubberized!!!). An Ex got the Model One in cherry... perfectly matching her 1880's kitchen, and the sound carried like a dream. BUT... now that I return to Tivoli for a visit, I see that non-functional gloss and gaudy colors associated with modern fads have replaced indoor/outdoor functionality and primary and pastel colors... AND who thought playing INTERNET audio over Kloss technology was a good idea? All that gives you is perfectly-amplified telephone-grade audio. If Tivoli products looked and worked like this in 1999, I never would have purchased my first one.

All that said, the people of Tivoli Support are excellent. If I had a glue-smeared face plate or a bad knob, just one short telephone call was enough to get the defective item repaired or replaced within the week.

PLEASE, Tivoli, GET BACK TO YOUR ROOTS.

IPAL

We have two Ipals and have liked them a lot. Their only drawback is that the power/selector switch becomes loose after a yr or two and then you cannot turn the radio on at all.

Impossible to see what station you are tuned too

This is my second pal radio. The audio is great, the battery life is great. My previous pal was one of my favorite possesions.

This time I got a gloss blue/silver one. The printing on the blue for tuning stations almost exactly matches the color of the unit, you can only see the printing as a reflection, like a smudge on a clean car. Under CFL lighting, or pretty bright halogen the printing on the unit has such low contrast it's invisible.

The color of the blue on the site has been photoshopped to be lighter than what is shipped.
The angle the radio is photographed at, is the angle that offers the best view of the printing, however the printing too has been lightened in the photos.

When I need to tune this radio, I must hold it 6 inches from my eyes, and move it around so the light reflects off the printing and it becomes visible.

Perfect.

That's not hyperbole. With its great sound and simplistic design coupled with the rechargeable battery - I couldn't ask for more.

PALIPOD: iPAL Radio - Great little radio. . .

We were looking for a radio with a small footprint with the ability to run off of batteries for our master bath. PALIPOD: iPAL Radio - Awesome after years and years!

I have never had a bit of trouble with the unit and its sound performance is as exceptional today as the day I received it. PALIPOD: iPAL Radio - Good things DO come in small packages!

I've had my Pal, which preceded the iPal for over 5 years and it still works and sounds as good as the day I bought it. Great sound from a small radio. It started out in the bedroom but was replaced by a Model 2 it then went to the bathroom but has found it's home sitting on my deck overlooking the park I live accross from for the last 3 years and it has weathered the Pacific NW weather very well. It's a very hardy unit. I plug my iPod into it and the sound still brings a smile to my face. An excellent product and I love the old school tuning dial style and spare design. Hope it last forever.

PALIPOD: iPAL Radio - iPal Rocks!

We got an iPal two years ago after visiting family in Norway that had one. LIttle did we realize how much we would use it and fall in love with it! We love the portability of iPal. It is small and light, so we move it around the house to listen to music where we have no other audio product. The tuning is phenomenal for a little radio, with great sensitivity. The speaker is great for such a little package. We listen to the radio, but we also hook up our ipod to the iPal and listen to music and podcasts. The battery has a long life and is easy to recharge. All around, I give it a resounding five stars. We're hoping to save up for another one for upstairs!

PALIPOD: iPAL Radio - Really? Something this small sounds that good?

I love the iPal radio. It's simple design and portability is great for indoor/outdoor use. It also has a BIG sound. I had a huge stereo system and wanted my space back so I purchased one of these (I now have three). I don't miss my old (old school!) system one bit! And the battery life is excellent. If you want a great all around radio, this is it. This radio was supposed to be discontinued a couple years ago but it's still here for a reason! It's great!

PALIPOD: iPAL Radio - more am

The FM reception is quite good since the unit has an external antenna. Sometimes though it seems like even FM reception is impacted by the cords from the power adaptor and head phones.

But AM can be spotty because there is no antenna for AM. What might be helpful is to add external antenna capabilities.

PALIPOD: iPAL Radio - Excellent outdoor radio.

I have the original PAL, not the iPAL. They are, I believe, essentially the same except for the iPod connection.

When I bought my PAL, I compared it with a Songbook. Both were at the same location in the store. The sound of the two was comparable; however, the difference between the tuners was dramatic. At their location, with the antennas extended fully, the PAL pulled in many more stations cleanly than the Songbook. It wasn't even close. Analog won out handily, so I bought the PAL. I've never been disappointed with its tuner performance, not only because of its sensitivity, but also because it locks onto stations so well, making it extremely easy to tune. And while I know this is only a matter of personal taste, I prefer the shape of the PAL to that of the Songbook.

Soundwise, my 5-star rating takes into account the size of the radio and its speaker. While it doesn't quite sound as good as the Model 1, the sound is, for its size, truly remarkable, from the lows up to the highs. And it plays loudly enough that I can use it with no problem in my backyard with a fair number of guests talking.

If the radio has one fault, it's the battery charging system. At one point Tivoli changed/upgraded the battery and it is the newer one I have; however, sometimes when I charge the unit, the green light, which is supposed to stop blinking when the battery is fully charged, does not stop regardless of how long the unit remains plugged in. I have no explanation for this; I simply now know that if it doesn't stop blinking after about 3 hours, I can assume there is a full charge.

This radio was a bargain when it first came out; now, it's still a great radio, but at its current price, not so much of a bargain as before.

PALIPOD: iPAL Radio - My favorite radio

I've owned my iPal for over a year and a half. It gets used everyday all around the house. The sound quality is superb and the radio tuner locks on to signals like no other radio I've ever owned. It's rare these days to find a product that has the iPal's combination of simplicity and quality.

PALIPOD: iPAL Radio - great great radio!

We have purchased 5 of these radios and use them every day now for about 4 years without incident - oops, broke one antenna. Rechargeable batteries could be more robust but we did get almost 3 years out of the unit that is in the kitchen and which gets the most use. They are a delight to use and wonderful on the ears!

PALIPOD: iPAL Radio - Incredible

I don't even have to talk about the sound or reception because that's just a given with Tivoli. This baby is absolutely amazing. I bought it years ago and it is still as the day I got it. The battery life is awesome - I just can't say enough. I HIGHLY recommend this product.

PALIPOD: iPAL Radio - Great sound, small package

When the power fails, I can rely on great long-lasting radio from this rechargeable. When I want bigger and truer sound on-the-go than I can get with other portable iPod players, this is my choice. I wish it had a built-in iPod dock that could charge as well as play, but none of the alternatives that offer that option delivers such good sound.

PALIPOD: iPAL Radio - This is my favorite radio in the world.

I have had one of these for 4 years, and it is the radio system I use the most. It is a constant companion whether I am working in my home office, out in the garage, in the bathroom, and out on the back porch. This radio can do it all, and sound good doing it. I hook my iPod up to it, and use the heck out of the radio. The PAL has a surprisingly good sound despite it's small size. I can't forget to mention the battery. I still have the original battery pack that came with the radio, and it still lasts for hours. I use it all the time and I only charge it once a week. IF you are hesitating over the price hesitate no longer, this radio is worth it.

PALIPOD: iPAL Radio - Best Kitchen Radio ever purchased

I love this little radio. Sounds great and small enough to fit in the window. People have actually asked if I had ceiling speakers! I also love taking this to the garage or outdoors while doing chores. I had looked at BOSE and other brands, but this blew them out of the water.
